Kevin Drew - Aging
“When you’re aging, and those around you are aging – people get sick, and people die,” Kevin Drew says. “There’s no real way to convey your pain or grief without being self-indulgent within the high-five denial – but regardless of the personal details, it’s a reality.” Aging, the third solo album from the co-founder of Toronto’s beloved indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene, was the inevitable title of Drew’s meditative new record – because he was living everything that comes with it. Compared to his shambolic solo debut Spirit If (2007), with its 23-piece band and romantic musings, to the black-light synth-pop-tinged Darlings (2014) and its carnal obsessions, Aging’s collection of minimalist piano ballads is darker and more contemplative than anything Drew has released before. Influenced by the passing of friends and mentors, as well as the health of friends and family, Aging brings together songs written over a decade marked by the signifiers of midlife – love, loss, and illness – all while wrestling with the hard truths of aging: How do you deal with the blunt-force impact of loss? What does it mean to look and feel different than you did before? Across the eight tracks on Aging – which runs a compact but potent 33 minutes – can be found the spirit of Drew classics like “Lover’s Spit” and “Sweetest Kill,” but with a sense of sorrow rarely heard on previous material. The writer of some of indie rock’s most life-affirming and celebratory anthems has become world sick. Lyrics like “We gotta find some time / Everybody’s dying for the time” from first single “Out In The Fields” are as doggedly hopeful as Drew has ever been – yet sound more like an impassioned plea than his typical rallying cry. The themes that have preoccupied much of Drew’s two-decades-long career are still present – the power of love, resisting apathy, the pursuit of connection – but the subject matter once exclaimed with the youthful fervour of a wide-eyed idealist now carries the weight of someone trying to make sense of the world in the throes of grief. In 2021, Drew found himself at The Tragically Hip’s Bathouse studio near Kingston, Ont. where he had been making records for the last decade. The initial goal was to make a children’s album, but as Drew and longtime collaborator Nyles Spencer started recording, they found themselves working towards an album about getting older, pulling from a collection of songs both old and new that fit together sonically and thematically.

ZOON

In the Ojibway language, the word Zoongide’ewin means “bravery, courage, the Bear Spirit.” It’s no wonder Daniel Monkman adopted Zoon as their musical moniker. The Hamilton-based musician has spent the better part of their 28 years finding and channelling their strength to overcome such adversities as racism, poverty and addiction.

Music saved Monkman’s life. And, on Zoon’s debut album, Bleached Wavves, they paint a message of hope and fortitude, lessons they learned studying the Seven Grandfather teachings after experiencing the lowest point of their life.

Born and raised in Selkirk, Manitoba, a small prison town outside of Winnipeg they describe as “one of the roughest places,” Monkman constantly faced an uphill battle. In their teens  they were victimized for their First Nations heritage, which led them to abusing drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. Their best friend died of an overdose; they nearly followed him on multiple occasions. But with the spiritual guidance they learned from 12-step therapy, Monkman got clean and began to follow a passion for music they discovered from a young age growing up within the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.

Bleached Wavves is the first true document of what has been dubbed “moccasin-gaze,” a tongue-in-cheek nickname for the amalgamation of Monkman’s shoegaze influences with traditional First Nations music. Like My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, a record that changed everything for them, Zoon pushes forward that famously quixotic, effects-laden sound with a distinctive, new approach.

A song like “Help Me Understand,” which mixes traditional hand drumming with gliding waves of droning guitar, feels like new ground has been broken for shoegaze fanatics to obsess over. As they got more into this mindset of mixing cultures, Monkman went even further with their trials, emerging with their most radical vision, the trance-inducing “Was & Always Will Be.”

Like most things in their life, making the album didn’t come easy for Monkman. Their gear was stolen, leaving them with virtually nothing and forcing them to get creative. They recorded the songs in their bedroom and  jam space, using only a Fender Deville guitar, a DigiTech delay pedal and - channelling their hero Kevin Shields - some “reverse engineering.”

Once it was finished, they got the music into the hands of the late publicist Darryl Weeks, who quickly became a fan of what he heard. With Weeks’ guidance and industry knowledge, Monkman found an ally willing to help out. They also found a label: Weeks passed on the record to fellow shoegaze enthusiast Trevor Larocque at Paper Bag Records, who offered to give Zoon a home.

While there is a healthy population of nu-gazers creating beautiful noise all over the world, Zoon’s debut stands out from all the others. Bleached Wavves is notable not just for its breathtakingly inimitable sounds and giving birth to a newfangled subgenre (see “moccasin-gaze”), but also for its modest, resourceful creation, the sign of a true sonic genius-in-the-making.

Aleksi Campagne
Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary, indie-folk take on the time-honoured fiddle-singing tradition. Aleksi grew up on stage. At five years old, he began performing alongside his mother, Canadian folk icon, Connie Kaldor. At nineteen, Aleksi moved to Paris to study under Jazz-violin legend Didier Lockwood. At twenty-one, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And, by twenty-five, with only a six-song EP, Aleksi graced the lineups of some of the most competitive folk festivals across Canada for three consecutive years - including the Regina, Canmore, and Bear Creek Folk Festivals. Most recently, Aleksi received both a Canada Council Grant and a FACTOR Grant to fully fund the recording and production of his highly-anticipated 10-song debut album For the Giving, launching fall 2023. Still based out of his hometown of Montreal, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and seamlessly navigating songs in English and in French. His original music blends folk songwriting with an edgy, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice, violin, and looping- effect pedals. “The dreamy orchestration and floaty vocals of ‘Another Day’ provide a silken sensory camouflage to Aleksi’s profound mastery of story-telling, letting the listener inside the heart of the singer with wordplay, imagery, pensive pauses and a thrillingly casual whistle solo.” -Paul Corby, Roots Music Canada

Raine Maida & Chantal Kreviazuk

Chantal Kreviazuk, a two-time JUNO Award winner and Raine Maida — a four-time winner with Our Lady Peace — are one of Canada’s most influential cultural couples.

Kreviazuk made her critically acclaimed full-length debut, Under These Rocks and Stones, in 1997. Since then, the Winnipeg born singer-songwriter has released five more studio albums, and garnered five JUNO Award nominations. Maida has forged a dynamic career as a solo artist and the front man for the band Our Lady Peace, 25-time JUNO Award nominees, including winners for Rock Album of the Year in 2003 (Gravity) and 1998 (Clumsy).

The pair has also co-written countless hits for artists such as Kelly Clarkson, David Cook and Carrie Underwood.

While Kreviazuk and Maida are quick to lend their time to the studio and stage, they are equally committed to lending their help to those in need — both in Canada and internationally. In March, the couple received the 2014 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award that recognizing outstanding Canadian artists whose contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada.

“Not only am I able to express myself, and be able to play music for others and be creative for a living in life, but I can go to the next level and be a part of true greatness — the process of another human being’s healing, possibly playing even a small role in improving the quality of life of another,” Kreviazuk said.

War Child Canada is one of the many organizations the married couple has embraced. Kreviazuk is an honourary founder and active in various causes including women’s rights, war refugees and child education. Maida launched War Child’s Busking for Change program, in which Canadian musicians have raised money for children in the world’s most devastated regions, supporting initiatives such as the construction of schools in the Congo. Additionally the couple has recorded contributions for multiple benefit albums for War Child.

“I was first drawn to music because of the inherent ‘hope’ it provided me,” Maida said. “Social activism carries that same promise and the two together have shaped and taught me more than I could ever repay.”

The Hidden Cameras

One of Canada’s most mercurial artists, Joel Gibb is the lead singer, songwriter and choir captain of The Hidden Cameras. Forming in Toronto in 2001, Gibb and his gang of musical provocateurs have created music and live performances legendary for their raucous, unfettered celebration of freedom and sexuality.

Released on the eve of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations, ‘Home On Native Land’ is an inquisitive ode to Gibb’s homeland; it’s a stealthy return to Canadian soil both philosophically and physically. After relocating to Berlin for some time, The Hidden Cameras pick up and head west to commune with musical ancestors and explore the gentle folk sounds of the Canadian countryside. But as with

everything Gibb does, there’s a darker undercurrent flowing beneath the Canadiana terrain. With the title ‘Home On NativeLand’ being a play on the national anthem line ‘home and native land’, this title questions the definition and identity of Gibb’s nation, referencing the raging debate about repatriation of First Nations in Canada. Ever the master of subversion, Gibb arches an inquiring eyebrow at the personal as well as the political through his songs, returning to themes of belonging and identity from within. As a commanding, provocative figurehead of the LGBTQ community, Gibb inhabits the guise of the lonesome cowboy to his own ends, plumbing the depths of musical memory and delivering a beautiful album of life affirming experiences in all its colours along the way.

‘Home On Native Land’ was written and recorded over ten years by Gibb with friends, bandmates and icons including Rufus Wainwright, Feist, Neil Tennant, Bahamas, Ron Sexsmith and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Gibb once again assembles a band of musical accomplices and takes them on an adventure in revisionist history, forming a chorus of voices over a score of dulcet tones and twanging rock. The album makes new offers to the Canadiana genre with infectious melodies (“Big Blue”) and wild hymns (“Drunk Dancer’s Waltz”),overarched by Gibbs’ trademark, honeyed vocals and sighing guitars. His talents as a songwriter and composer remain undimmed, his on point lyrics oozing with hopefulness, joy and sorrow.

Alongside several new compositions, ‘Home On Native Land’ also borrows from the classic country songbook, reimagining soulful standards like “Dark End of the Street,” and “Don’t Make Promises” originally recorded by Tim Hardin. “Log Driver’s Waltz” is a cover of one of the most successful and beloved Canadian folk songs of all time. On “He is the Boss of Me” Gibb turns the tables and covers himself, giving a classicHidden Cameras song a proper studio recording, transforming it from an early 4track demo from 2001debut EP ‘Ecce Homo’.

Aeolian Jazz & Musical Arts Festival Presents... Julian Taylor

Julian Taylor doesn’t fit in a box. He never has—and more power to him. A Toronto music scene staple and a musical chameleon, Julian Taylor is used to shaking it up over the course of 10 albums in the last two decades. Of West Indian and Mohawk descent, Taylor first made his name as frontman of Staggered Crossing, a Canadian rock radio staple in the early 2000s. These days, however, the soulful singer/guitarist might be on stage one night playing with his eponymous band, spilling out electrified rhythm and blues glory, and the next he’ll be performing at a folk festival delivering a captivating solo singer-songwriter set. His songs have been placed in shows like Kim’s Convenience, Haven, Private Eyes and Elementary. He’s been invited to perform at two Olympic Games. The soulful blues, rhythmic soul, rootsy rock riffs and troubadour-esque folk songs that comprise his music are worth putting your busy life on hold for. In everything he does, Taylor has carved his own path, creating genre-free music with a generosity of spirit and a strong belief in the healing powers of song. Off stage, Taylor recently ventured into radio; when the Indigenous radio station ELMNT FM opened in Toronto in 2018, Taylor became the station’s afternoon-drive host.

Taylor’s journey began in a musically artistic family: his father plays classical piano, while his cousins on both sides of his family sing and play music, and his uncle is the conductor of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, which focuses on Afrocentric vocal music. Taylor started piano at age 5 and learned acoustic guitar over summer campfires. In 1995, while still in high school, he formed the band The Midnight Blues and started playing open stages in North Toronto. That band morphed into Staggered Crossing who were signed to a publishing deal in 1997, and their self-titled debut, released in 2001, spawned four rock radio singles, including top 10 hit “Further Again.”

When Staggered Crossing split amicably in 2007, Taylor started anew as a solo artist with two albums of rootsier material, while grinding it out on the cover band circuit in small towns across Ontario. In 2014, he launched the Julian Taylor Band and this time, all bets were off: all of Taylor’s myriad influences were on the table, masterfully combining and updating vintage sounds that inspired him to create bold, innovative new songs. Modern pop, vintage R&B, smooth soul, and the rock’n’roll swagger he was known for, were all tied together with an intense devotion to craft and a collection of some of Toronto’s finest musicians. JTB have three studio albums to date—their acclaimed debut Tech Noir, released in 2014, the double record Desert Star released two years later and 2019’s acclaimed Avalanche—and have no plans to slow down, although in 2020 Taylor revisited his solo career with 2020’s contemplative The Ridge.

Toronto poet Robert Priest describes Taylor and his work as “the kind of artist forever in the zone, the voice limitless, the songs full of feeling.

Ben Caplan - SECOND SHOW ADDED!

Ben Caplan is both the roar of the hurricane and the eye of the storm. He has an uncanny ability to channel both wild abandon and quiet introspection. His songwriting pulls from many diverse influences but both his music and his lyrics regularly draw from his Jewish heritage. Often mixing biblical imagery and klezmer inflected melodies, Caplan re-appropriates ancient sounds and themes with a decidedly contemporary twist.

Ben released his first studio album in 2011, and has spent the last ten years recording music and performing to ever growing audiences in music clubs and theatres around the world. For the ten year anniversary of his first release, Caplan has recorded a retrospective collection of stripped back re-interpretations of songs from across his catalogue. The album, entitled Recollection, will be released in October of 2021 followed by an extensive European and Canadian tour.

Terra Spencer

Windsor, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer discovered her passion for crafting songs while touring with country artist Ryan Cook, after being recruited as a backup singer in 2014 while scooping ice cream at a music festival. Since making her solo debut in 2018, she has charmed audiences in the Maritimes, Ontario, the UK, and Europe with deft fingerstyle guitar, gospel piano, butterscotch voice, and easy onstage conversation, making you feel knee-to-knee with her even in a room of 500. Her knack for telling intimate stories with heart and humour has caught the attention of Canadian musical mentors like David Francey and Ron Sexsmith, and she has become a sought-after studio vocalist and co-writer, leading a successful series of Words & Noise songwriting workshops in person and online. Terra's debut recording Other People's Lives was nominated for 2019 Music NS Americana Album of the Year, and she was selected by Dave Gunning to receive an Emerging Artist grant from the National Arts Centre in 2020. Her newly-released followup Chasing Rabbits, recorded at Sonic Temple in Halifax during quarantine, is a collection of very personal songs about family life and wildlife, leaving and longing, and the meaning of home. Set against the backdrop of the Canadian winter, the album features some of Nova Scotia's best players including The Bombadils and Bela Strings, with Terra in the producer's seat. Chasing Rabbits has received international airplay and quickly claimed spots on numerous lists from critics, DJs, and listeners of the Best Albums of 2020. Beginning in June 2021, Terra will be touring with a full band show celebrating the golden anniversary of the music of 1971 in theatres and festival stages across the province.

Coeur de Pirate
Twelve years have passed since Béatrice Martin appeared in our lives as Cœur de pirate. Over this period of time, the singer-songwriter and pianist has sold over a million albums and earned several million fans who listen to her songs on repeat via streaming platforms. The mark she has made in the French-speaking pop world is indelible and undeniable. Looking back to her beginnings, it’s safe to say that when Béatrice Martin began performing alone at the piano, she rose like a tidal wave that swept over Montreal’s stagnating indie-rock scene. Bolstered by the success of her early concerts, she released a self-titled debut in September 2008, which went platinum in Canada and diamond in France. Bypassing the usual channels, she almost immediately made a name for herself on the other side of the Atlantic, a feat many famed Quebec artists took years to achieve. Parting with the piano in favour of a more playful pop sound, she followed up with Blonde (2011), a sophomore release that was also certified platinum in Canada and in France. In 2012, the album earned Béatrice the Félix awards for Pop Album of the Year and Female Performer of the Year. Her third album, a bilingual effort titled Roses (2015), reached gold status in Canada and in France, with over 200 000 copies sold worldwide. In 2016, Cœur de pirate earned the Félix award for English-Language Album of the Year, while also making her mark in English-speaking Canada with a JUNO nomination for the Fan Choice award. With a trail of sold-out shows to her credit in Canada, France, the United States, Mexico, England, Spain, Italy, and Germany, Cœur de pirate has established herself as a unifying voice and a safe bet on stages. Thus, she has been welcomed by the greatest Canadian and European festivals over the past decade, including Les Francofolies de la Rochelle, the Festival d’été de Québec, and Osheaga, to name only a few. After several years spent touring the world, a sense of creative urgency set in. As a result, En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé was released in 2018, just in time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Cœur de pirate’s career. In addition to touring internationally in support of the record, Cœur de pirate kicked off the 2019 edition of Les Francos de Montréal before hundreds of fans at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, giving a standout show that marked the realization of a dream. As she continued to honour her busy touring schedule, she earned many stellar accolades along the way, including the Singer-Songwriter of the Year and Female Performer of the Year awards at the SOCAN and ADISQ ceremonies, respectively. In the public eye every week as a coach on Quebec’s reality talent show La Voix and a judge on France’s singing competition Nouvelle Star, Cœur de pirate increasingly aspires to use her platform to take stands on political and social issues. Her feminist stance is unequivocal in the song “T’es belle,” and the music video for the song—Béatrice’s debut as a director—delivers a frank blow to everyday sexism, clearly embracing the paradigm shift of our times. In the midst of what was already an eventful year, Cœur de pirate shook things up even more in 2020 when she took the reins of the record label that saw her rise to fame, renaming the company Bravo musique. In this brand-new role, Béatrice takes pride in spotlighting the talent that surrounds her, in all its wonderful complexity. She is also invested in mentoring young and emerging artists. In the spring of 2021, Cœur de pirate returned to her first love with Perséides, an album of new instrumental pieces where the piano reigns supreme. She is currently working on another full-length album, which is set to be released before the end of 2021.
