Deni Gauthier
Quietly building his own scene for the last 10 years or so, Deni Gauthier has been delighting audiences all over Canada, the United States, and Europe. His beautiful voice and lush ambient guitar playing, layered with just the right amount of understated live looping create a sonic soundscape quite like his last two studio albums: Quiet Town and Passenger. From a quiet whisper, sometimes with a firm nudge, Deni is able to somehow connect musically and lyrically with songs that wander along the path of the strangely beautiful things in life. Old love, broken relationships, people trying to find their way. Dark yet beautiful, simple yet entangling. Deni can be heard all over CBC and independent radio and has charted throughout Canada and the States with several #1 positions to his name. If he is not working in his own studio he can be found on the road, sharing stories and songs to listening audiences sitting quietly and comfortably somewhere. He has been nominated for many awards, including several prestigious Jack Richardson Music Awards in the Contemporary Singer/Songwriter category. He tours often, and has shared with the stage with the likes of Jason Collette, Ron James, Barney Bental, Linda McRae, Irish Mythen, Steve Forbert and so many others, Deni’s performance skills have been honed and refined to offer a unique live musical experience.
Deni lets us in through his songs, and we might even learn something about ourselves in the process. This music is the antithesis of cacophony; this is musical peace. Put the headphones on and listen to "Passenger" and see if you don’t agree. (Jamie Oppenheimer, Host, "Lyrical Workers", Hunters Bay Radio) Oppenheimer’s headphone recommendation is a good one – have a few intimate listens all on your own. Then share with family and friends and maybe enjoy a little prideful boasting, “This fantastic talent lives right here in my community!” Relish Elgin Magazine
His musical quest for meaning and understanding are transformative and inclusive. As he quips self-effacingly in the description of one of his songs, Deni Gauthier is "the artist" forging meaning from a troubled and confusing world. I left last night's concert a little more connected and at peace with myself than when I arrived." - Jamie Oppenheimer. Hunters Bay Radio

Sherman Downey

Sherman Downey’s radio-friendly brand of upbeat folk/pop appeals to a wide demographic. His debut album "Honey For Bees” was well received by fans and critics alike, earning him ‘Musicnl’s Male Artist of the Year’ and broadening his reach on an international stage.

His highly anticipated second release "The Sun In Your Eyes" was awarded ‘MusicNL's Pop/Rock Recording of the Year' and given Newfoundland and Labrador's 'SOCAN Songwriter of the Year' distinction as well as an ECMA nomination for ‘Group Recording of the Year’ with his band, The Ambiguous Case. The album's first single 'Thick as Thieves” went on to win Sherman the CBC's inaugural Searchlight Prize as ‘Canada's Best New Artist’ while increasing his profile as a touring act with a growing fan base.

Sherman’s latest collection of songs, entitled ‘New Beautiful’, offers a glimpse at what it’s like to wander from home and long for return. Fans of his first two albums will be happy to hear familiar character-driven songs that embrace the folk and country roots he cut his teeth on, but will no doubt notice a new musical exploration. Downey delves into straight-up keys-pop before switching into gritty up-close-and-personal meanderings on parlour guitar and piano with lush strings and horns sweeping in to carry the listener through the album. When he sings of letting loose in the local dance hall, people-watching from the front porch, or playing with love in out-of-the-way gas stations, Sherman speaks to those of us who yearn for some sort of change in their day to day. ‘New Beautiful’ will be available in the coming months--stay tuned!

Madison Violet
For those who don’t know of Madison Violet, it all began in 1999. Brenley and Lisa met over weak coffee and broccoli omelettes, in a restaurant called The Green Room, in Toronto. It was a chance meeting, 1900 kms away from the small town where both Lisa and Brenley’s fathers were born. That was 17 years ago, and the pair have been writing and creating beautiful music together ever since. When you hear them, the first thing you’ll notice is that their voices blend together, symbiotically, like family: Born to sing the same songs. And over the past decade and a half, the pair have taken to genre-bending, moving effortlessly from folk to pop to electronic to Americana. In a word, they are musical chameleons. Madison Violet’s first 2 studio albums, 'Worry the Jury' and 'Caravan', were recorded with notable producer John Reynolds (Sinead O'Connor, U2, Damien Dempsey) and were critically acclaimed, garnering the pair several ECMA and CFMA nominations. Their 3rd and 4th releases, 'No Fool for Trying' and 'The Good In Goodbye' are homegrown collections, recorded in Ontario with producer Les Cooper at the helm. Their 5th studio recording, ‘Year of the Horse’ was recorded in Toronto by acclaimed producer, Tino Zolfo (Carly Rae Jepson, Soul Decision, Hawksley Workman), and solidified the duo as musically versatile powerhouse songwriters. This past Christmas, Madison Violet released their first holiday album, 'Sleigh Bells In The Snow' to rave reviews. It is an eclectic mix of Christmas songs, old and new, which also featured their good friend, Ron Sexsmith, on 'Frosty The Snowman'. And finally, their newest collection of songs 'The Knight Sessions' is a mix of stripped back, acoustic takes on some of their more upbeat musings as well as a new batch of poetic and heartfelt tunes. Over the years, Madison Violet have acquired quite a few accolades, including a Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Vocal Group Album of the Year and a Critic’s Choice award from Country Music People’s Magazine. Their songs have been featured in the notorious music magazine MOJO’s Top 10 Playlist, and received a mass of acclaim from outlets such as the BBC, the CBC, Maverick Magazine and NPR, and have earned the duo the Grand Prize in the 2010 Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest (which was voted on by a panel of distinguished artists including Elton John, Tim McGraw, Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, John Legend, Enrique Iglesias and Mary J. Blige). Madison Violet were on Germany’s WDR's list of ‘Best Bands of All Time’ as well as having song placements on various television shows. Their recent single ‘These Ships’ was released on one of the largest dance labels in the U.S., Ultra Records, and has garnered over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify already. Brenley and Lisa are singer-songwriters. Multi-instrumentalists. Harmonizers. Dog lovers. Nature walkers. Painters. Tennis fanatics. Amateur chefs. They have been described as pop, roots, indie, dance and Americana, but think that this quote sums them up best...
Madison Violet has suddenly appeared like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day."

Ellen Doty

Join Ellen Doty and her trio to celebrate the launch of her sophomore album, "Come Fall" in London. Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Her music incorporates everything from jazz to soul, folk, pop and indie music: a sound that is uniquely hers. A true storyteller whose works are as intimate and as personal as their handwritten lyrics, Ellen's immense talent for songwriting is only complemented by her stunning vocals. Originally from Okotoks, AB, she currently makes her home in Calgary.

Her debut album Gold reached the top ten on the college jazz radio charts in Canada, and she followed up the release with a crowd-funded, self-booked 40 stop Canadian tour. In the past year, Doty has continued to tour extensively in Canada. She had the opportunity to open for two-time Grammy-winner Gregory Porter, and recently completed a concert theatre tour with award-winning saxophonist Eli Bennett from Vancouver. Doty was recently named one of the top 35 under 35 jazz artists in Canada by CBC Music along with BadBadNotGood, Larnell Lewis, Nikki Yanosky, and more: With an honesty and warmth that sets her apart from so many artists, Doty is an emerging Canadian talent who is clearly one to watch for 2017 and beyond.

Doty signed a record deal with Toronto-based label Alma Records, and her new album will come out on Universal Music in Canada on March 2nd, 2018 with a Canadian tour to follow. On the tour, she will be joined by Edmonton-born Efa Etoroma (Moonchild) on drums, and pianist Eric Haynes from Montreal (Busty and the Bass). The new album features solely the sounds of the trio: voice, piano, and drums. It seeks to strip the music down to its bare bones, in a powerful minimalist approach.

Marty Kolls & Paul Aitken

London locals and OEV residents Marty Kolls and Paul Aitken are no strangers. Paul is often found onstage for Marty's full band performances. They also play together in Kevin Bacon's Train, a bluegrass group that sings Top 40 covers. This set will be comprised of jazz standards, with maybe a Marty Kolls original or two dropped in as well for good measure. Paul was also honoured with a nomination for Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year 2018 from the Jack Richardson London Music Awards.

Laila Biali

Laila Biali is an award-winning Canadian pianist & vocalist – and now weekly radio host (“Saturday Night Jazz,” 8 p.m. to midnight on CBC Radio 2) – who continues to garner global recognition for her performances at prestigious venues like the North Sea Jazz Festival (The Netherlands), Tokyo’s Cotton Club, and New York’s Carnegie Hall.  Over the past couple of years, she has toured with Grammy winners Chris Botti, Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega.  Also, she has recorded with and supported music icon Sting, who raved, “Laila is an exciting and unique talent and I admire her greatly.”

But for all her artistic brilliance and string of critical accolades, it’s Laila’s affinity for seeking inspiration in human relationships that most defines this highly admired artist. These special qualities were recognized by Toronto pianist Ron Davis, who described Laila as “a spiritually deep and beautiful soul,” adding “and this shows in her music."

A TD Sunfest standout over many years, Laila returns to London on March 1st to celebrate the release of her new follow-up album of genre-bending originals and covers (songs by David Bowie, Coldplay and Randy Newman).  Debuting at #1 on iTunes Jazz Canada, and #7 on iTunes Jazz USA, this eponymous recording further expands upon Laila’s unique “ability to meld traditional jazz with contemporary pop so effortlessly that neither style seems out of place on the same record” (Spinner Magazine).

Catchy, sophisticated, and unlike anything currently on the radio, it’s pop music, but not the kind that can be neatly tagged by an algorithm. Melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-choruses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute, Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs (“Got to Love”);  the next, she is pouring out her soul on an impassioned, slow-burning plea for empathy (“Refugee”). It’s pop music, but the experimental, distinctly human variety popularized by Regina Spektor, Rachael Yamagata and Sara Bareilles.  And it’s more improvisatory and spontaneous than House of Many Rooms. “We’ve brought the jazz back in, in a more meaningful way,” Laila says.
