TUNES@NOON: Willow Switch

Willow Switch is a dark folk music duo that embodies the crossroads of tradition and subversion. The band consists of saw-player and guitarist Andra Zlatescu and banjo player Robin Henry. Together they call upon the spirits of the land to create ambient haunting harmonies and sing open the doorways to other realms.

Their debut album, released in October 2023, is a musical journey through the dark spiritual dirges that evoke a sense of foreboding, much like a cold fog billowing down a mountain. Willow Switch’s melodies are equally eerie and captivating, luring listeners into the dark, uninhabited corners of the woodlands. Their sound has been called “doom-folk”, “heavy meadow”, “folk noir”, “the crossroads between Appalachian and Black Sabbath”. If you venture fearlessly into the secret heart of the forest you can find out for yourself.

At the core of Willow Switch’s music lies a deep reverence for folkloric stories. They spin tales of civilization lost and reclaimed by nature, exploring themes of grief for old almost-forgotten pathways, and weaving those threads of memory into dreaming up new futures. Through their music, Willow Switch seeks to carve out a new path in the folk music landscape, reviving the traditions of the past and breathing new life into them.

Join Willow Switch on their musical journey as they bring their unique brand of haunting folk music to the world. Let their music transport you to another realm, where spirits roam free and the ancient stories of the land are waiting to be told.

Reuben and the Dark

For more than a decade, Reuben and the Dark has become one of Canada’s most distinctive voices in modern folk and indie rock, building a catalogue of songs that blur the line between intimate confession and communal anthem. Led by Calgary songwriter Reuben Bullock, the project has earned an international following through its emotionally expansive songwriting, cinematic sound, and live performances that transform audiences into choirs.

Raised in the foothills of southern Alberta, Bullock grew up surrounded by wide-open landscapes, long winters, and a family whose love, struggles and resilience would become lifelong sources of inspiration. Before Reuben and the Dark emerged, he spent years writing songs while fronting local bands and working construction jobs, slowly developing the lyrical honesty and emotional depth that would come to define his work. In 2014, the release of the band’s debut album Funeral Sky introduced a songwriter capable of pairing deeply personal stories with soaring, cathartic arrangements. Songs from the record quickly found audiences around the world through film, television and streaming, establishing Reuben and the Dark as one of Canada’s breakout independent acts.

Over the years, Bullock has continued to expand the project’s musical vocabulary across acclaimed albums including Arms of a Dream (2018), Unlove (2019) and In Lieu of Light (2022). While each record explores different emotional terrain, they share a common thread: an unwavering belief that vulnerability can be a form of strength, and that even the darkest experiences can become places of connection.

That philosophy has taken Reuben and the Dark across North America and Europe, sharing stages with artists including Mumford & Sons, Vance Joy, Boy & Bear, The Paper Kites, and Half Moon Run, while performing at major festivals and headline shows throughout Canada and abroad. Along the way, the band’s music has appeared in dozens of film and television productions—including Ted LassoGrey’s AnatomyThe Good DoctorStation 19The OrderThe Last of Us, and El Camino - introducing Reuben and the Dark’s songs to audiences far beyond the concert stage.

What has remained constant is Bullock’s commitment to writing from lived experience. His songs frequently explore grief, faith, addiction, healing, love and the search for meaning - not as abstract ideas, but as realities navigated in real time. Whether performing with a full band, in collaboration with Indigenous Powwow group, Bullhorn Singers, or alone with an acoustic guitar, he approaches songwriting less as performance than conversation: an invitation for listeners to find pieces of themselves inside someone else’s story.

That impulse reaches its fullest expression on If You Know Me You Know My Brother. Completed shortly following the death of Bullock’s older brother, the album is both his most personal work and his most liberating. Many of its songs were written over more than a decade, finally finding their place after years of waiting. Free from outside expectation and proudly self-releasing for the first time, Bullock embraced what he calls his “I stopped giving a fuck” record - a collection rooted in family, memory, forgiveness and the enduring power of human connection.

More than five albums into his career, Reuben Bullock continues to write songs that remind listeners they are not alone. Through moments of heartbreak and hope, silence and celebration, Reuben and the Dark has become less a band than a gathering place - where strangers sing together, grief becomes something shared, and healing begins one song at a time.

TUNES@NOON: Paul & Trevor Mills

Paul Mills was born weeks before the end of the second world war. He almost became a chemical engineer. However, the world became a better place when he ran away and joined the CBC in the seventies-heyday of respectable budgets.  Over the course of those early years, he enabled the founding of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, flew across the Arctic Circle with Anne Murray, created a weekly folk music radio show hosted by Sylvia Tyson, produced all but one of Stan Rogers’ records, fathered Trevor, and then exposed him to the persistent culture of folk music.

For Paul is a picker, and one of the finest from back in the day.  Yet, he approaches music as a producer, always looking for and finding the tasteful ways to make the song – whatever song – just, better.  That approach informed Trevor’s early musical influences.  Mills the younger grew to be an intuitive bass player and songwriter himself, touring across Canada with the likes of Digging Roots, Nathan Rogers and Aengus Finnan.

Trevor found his own balance between science and the arts.  After graduating as an engineer, specializing in quantum physics, he found a career as a software developer.  Coding is something he could do from the back of the tour van while driving across Canada for days at a time.  He is more settled into home life these days, finding time around work for music with friends and family in Barrie, Ontario.

Paul is still going strong.  Although he has retired from his work as a record producer, he’s performing more solo shows these days than he has in years. In 2017, he was named as a Member of the Order of Canada for his years of exemplary contributions to the music industry and in 2021 he was inducted into the London Music Hall of Fame.

Paul & Trevor have always enjoyed playing music together.  The grooves lock effortlessly, their repertoires are complimentary, and the harmonies are familial.  They’re both drawn to the lyrics of a song, be they playful and light, or poetic and poignant, and they’re excited at the opportunity to bring their music to you.
